A big part of the responsibility of parents is to teach their children what is right and what is wrong. One of the main reasons that kids are not heading down the right path is that they don't have guidance.
Giving them a good and solid foundation for them to develop a strong work ethic is extremely important. It may be hard for them to understand right now, but this not only gives them something to do and a financial incentive to do it, but it also orders other areas of their lives.
Kids will also benefit from getting a well rounded view of the world and life in general. Giving them some culture and experiences in a wide range of activities will enrich their lives and open doors for them that otherwise would not be possible.
Strong families that are happy and healthy will do more to contribute to the opportunities and direction a kid will take. There is nothing like it, and it is difficult to duplicate. Having respect and love and admiration for family members will keep them on the right track and also help them to learn how to be a good parent and person down the line.
The next thing that should go is television and video games. There is seriously little that is enriching on cable, and other than a little here and there, it is huge waste of time. Television is so hypnotic, that after a while, reality and what we see on screen becomes intertwined and what we take in with our eyes has a direct effect on what we give back in our lives. Getting rid of it is not the issue, but limiting the time is what is important.
Games are another thing that is a really big waste of time in addition poison for the brain. Spending hours killing people on virtual reality games, or speeding through downtown and destroying property is not something that kids should be feeding on during their spare time.
The best thing to do to keep them out of trouble is keep them active, spend time with them and give them an interactive and peaceful environment to grow up in. This is the responsibility of the parents more than anything, and it is really important to take the bull by the horns and loving lead your children.
