Fun Ways to Teach Kids About Money

May is observed as child's month, so I decided to search the Internet for interesting and fun ways to teach our children about money and personal finance. Equipping our kids to handle money wisely is one of the most important skills we can give them. It is my dream that one day, there will be a financial literacy curriculum in all schools, so that our children will be fully prepared to deal with managing, multiplying and maintaining their money as adults.

Let's look at some websites that offer stimulating money lessons and products:

Rich Kid Smart Kid

Developed by the team that created the Rich Dad Poor Dad series of books, this site uses interactive games to teach valuable financial lessons. Each game has different age levels, showing kids how to make profit, deal with debt, pay yourself first, and invest in business and assets. It features detailed teacher's guides for all the games. Also available for purchase online are the CASHFLOW for Kids CD and board game, which are excellent tools to help children ages six and over, learn important concepts about attaining financial freedom.

Young Investors Network

Offered by Citigroup, this site features a cool, interactive game called PlayVestor that's best for older children. The game takes you to Lemon-Aid where you learn how to operate a business to make profit and give donations; Bowl for the Goal where you set targets for your investing needs, Financial Re-turns a memory game which teaches you investing terms; Target Values which is perfect for trigger-happy video game players; and Credit Carts, a road racing game that tested your dexterity in avoiding money pitfalls while earning income at the Money Station. This game had me hooked, but unfortunately my mouse skills left a lot to be desired! The site also features simple goal calculators.

Investing for Kids

This is an excellent resource for teaching teenagers about personal finance. It was actually created by young people and uses simple, effective language and examples that are easy to understand. It features a beginners section that takes you through goal setting, inflation, investing options and risks; a goal calculator that demonstrates how to save for college or how to make a million dollars; and a stock learning centre that explains the intricacies of investing in the stock market.

Big Money Adventure

This website features five cute cartoon characters that accompany kids through different adventures. It's appropriate for all ages, and best for children who are learning the basics about money. Rainbow Castle, for two to six year-olds gives colouring pages; Storybook Adventures is an interactive tale of how kids make decisions with money, that's geared at six to ten years olds; and Star Traders gives older children to choose stocks. Just key in 'Big Money Adventure' and you'll be re-directed to the site which is operated by a U.S. brokerage firm, A.G. Edwards.

YoungInvestor.com

This site offers excellent resources for younger children, teens, parents and teachers. In simple terms, it explains topics such as investing goals, understanding the stock market, budgeting, charitable giving and more. You can download a wide variety of games and word puzzles that will help to stimulate kids to learn more about personal finance, and test your skills in the Stock Race and Stock Drop games.

SmartStart for Kids

This site is CIBC's kid-friendly way to teach the basics of money and banking. The ABC's of Money defines common financial terms in simple language, while other links features basic lessons on saving, investing and borrowing. The games section offers Pig-e-Bank, in which younger children can try to fill up their piggy banks with falling coins; while the Allowance Room teaches kids how long they would have to save up their allowances in order to buy toys and other items. Key in SmartStart for Kids into Google and it will locate the site for you.

BuckInvestor.com

This site declares itself the 'most comprehensive resource for investors under 35', so it's targeted to young adults as well as older children. The high points about this site are that it presents a wealth of information about many financial topics, and it uses simple language to explain subjects such as compounding, asset allocation and inflation. I would recommend that parents and older children explore this site together, as it's a great learning tool that can help both young and old become better investors.

The Internet is teaming with many more websites geared at teaching our kids to be money-savvy, so log on and spend some quality time with them. You'll definitely end up learning important financial tips that will help you, too!

Keeping Kids Happy on Long Car Trips - Plan For Fun!

I was first confronted with this daunting dilemma while managing my neighborhood toy store. A frazzled mother came in hoping to find some ideas for keeping her busy kids happy on a car trip to her parents home. After working there for six years before becoming a mother myself it has become clear that parents quite capable of tackling everyday parenting issues often freeze up when it comes time to bringing their little ones on long trips in the car. They have no idea how they are going to avoid chaotic meltdowns, hours of screaming or "are we there yet" style whining. There is hope and with a little planning most if not all of these situations can be avoided.

Let's get the obvious distraction tactics out of the way so we can get into the really good stuff. A portable DVD player, along with some classic favorites or some new never before seen stuff, while this can depend upon the age groups and personalities of your kids, you know what will work better - I always try for both. You can download children's books on "tape" via pod-casts and bringing along favorite upbeat tunes for you and the kids is always a good idea. Allowing ipods and mp3 players is also an option but you may want to set limits on them as I often do so be sure to discuss these limits with the kids beforehand. I think the same applies to hand held games like Nintendo DS - set up any limitations or turn taking guidelines you'd like to have beforehand in order to avoid disagreements later.

About a month before your trip grab a laundry basket and go through the house with two thoughts in mind a) what toys/activities are their favorites and b)can that be done in the car. For the younger kids, you may not want to let them know you're doing this and for the older ones they might be able to do this themselves. Great, now that you have your pile of stuff pick out the best and keep it hidden until the trip so that you will be armed with toys that have a new appeal but are also bankable favorites for your trip! Some ideas, card games, favorite stuffies, action figures, polly pockets and transformers, any travel games etc. Many times I'll pack each kid a little bag of their own but as our family has grown I have found it easier to keep one fun bag at the ready rather than deal with too much stuff underfoot in the van.

Next make a trip to the nearest dollar store and choose squishy, touchable stuff, like slinkies, sticky stretchy toys, activity and coloring books, blank and lined notebooks, noisemakers (it's better to hear a harmonica than a screaming toddler) small puzzles than can be done on a book on a lap, magnetic play boards, sticker activities, chewing gum in case you need to drive through any mountains it will help ears to "pop" and my personal favorite, glo-in-the-dark necklaces, bracelets, etc for when it's too dark to do anything else - be sure to buy the non-toxic ones as my second child tends to bite them after an hour or so! We even placed them around the hotel room as night lights for the kids to navigate their way around a strange room at night!

Consider making your own games - older kids can help with this! Car Bingo is a classic in my family, simply take squares of paper then with a thick black marker and a ruler draw four or five lines down, and the same across, then after a trip to the dollar store put stickers of farm animals, cars, trucks, road signs, wildlife, dogs, birds, cats etc. in each square, make one card for each traveler, but not the driver, and simply have the kids mark them as they spot the things on their cards - a line is a bingo! Then the cards get passed along and a new game begins. The best way to mark them is to get them laminated and then use a crayon to mark and a facial tissue to rub off.

Other games include looking for neat license plates, red barns, counting horses or the classic punch buggy game - minus the hitting, we slap the seat in our car. Another classic with my family involves a deck of cue cards with a thing to find on each one. Road signs, railroad crossings, emergency vehicles, churches, speed limits, pylons, animal crossings, gas stations, favorite restaurants etc. We make up the cards beforehand and to play we deal out 3 at a time, when you spot one of your items you put the card in your lap, score a point and draw another card, first to five wins! Variations can involve each item having different points values, or event cards like steal a point card from another player, choose one card and place it in your points pile, lose or gain one point, trade hands with another player, etc. Be creative and inventive, maybe you can add in landmarks or rules specific to your route of travel!

A final thought, consider stopping along the way at fun, free, or cheap places, it adds time but makes for a memorable journey. When our family was faced with a 21 hour drive we opted to spread it out over 3 days and stopped in at little museums, aquariums, a cave tour, a mall with a huge old merry-go-round inside, Hershey, Pennsylvania, a state park and other neat stops along the way. Before your trip make a list of the cities you will be driving through and then Google the area to see if there are any neat places to stop that might be a perfect side trip for your kids. Taking these moments where and if possible can relieve a lot of the stress and tedium of a long drive with the kids.

By planning ahead for fun you are sure to arrive a much happier family and will have made positive car trip memories that will last a lifetime. Happy Trails!

10 Tips to Help Kids Adjust to a Move

The prospect of moving a residence can be hugely unsettling for children. The idea of losing the only home they know, their school and their friends all at one time, may seem almost inconceivable. Below are some tips that can help all children make a smooth transition to a new home.

1. Generally it is best to let children know about a move once a decision has been made. Telling a child that they "might" move, may cause uncertainty, confusion and anxiety.

2. Prepare the child for the move. Give them information about their new community and new school. If possible, bring your child to the new neighborhood. Show him the house he will be living in. Drop by his new school. If this is not doable, try to find your neighborhood on Google Earth and walk the neighborhood virtually.

3. Create a book of resources about the new area. This can include a map, brochures of local kids clubs, activities and teams. Also include brochures of places that might be of special interest to your child, such as an amusement park, planetarium or a professional sports team in the area.

4. After your child has reviewed all the materials about his new home, ask him what kinds of clubs or teams he might like to join once he moves. Make a list. This will encourage the child to think positively about the move, and focus on opportunities and new experiences.

5. Ideally, it would be best for children to be with a relative or friend on moving day. Seeing their things being unpacked can be unsettling for some children. If you can set up the child's room before he arrives at the new house, this will give him a sense of stability, and the house will be introduced as more of a home.

6. With the advent of texting and the internet, it is easy for kids to stay in touch with friends and relatives from the old neighborhood. These contacts can offer emotional support while your child is adjusting socially to his new environment. Over time, there will be a natural attrition in this correspondence as the child becomes involved with kids and activities in his new neighborhood.

7. Schedule family activities soon after the move. This will give kids a sense of a belonging in an unfamiliar place.

8. Meet your neighbors. Whether you go door to door and introduce yourselves or strike up conversations on the street or in park, model friendliness for your children. Show them how to meet new people and make new friends.

9. Join a local church or club to meet new people as a family.

10. Sign your child up for classes, clubs and teams. This is a great way for your child to meet other kids, particularly if you move during summer vacation. If the child is in new school, encourage him or her to invite new friends over to your house.

Remember that although a move can initially be disconcerting for children, it can benefit them in the long run. Children who successfully adapt to a move learn early on that they can adapt to new situations, and be happy in different places in different circumstances. This kind of adaptability can help them immeasurably over a lifetime.

Free Laptops For Kids

You are a mother, or a child, and you want free laptops for kids online. Where could you turn? That is where I come in to help. I have helped family and friends receive many free gifts online. I am actually using my latest one to type this. There are a few decent ones to actually get one with limited effort, online.

Most people may think that this is all lies, but it really isn't. Businesses are always looking for information and statistics on consumers. Those consumers are you. So how do they get this information? They offer things in return for your time. For example, a few years back, I found out that Sprint was possibly releasing a cell phone booster for people who had bad reception at home on a Sprint cell phone. All I did was fill out a little form online, and returned the required survey a few months later. I got to keep the gift, free of charge. In the end, Sprint never even released the product, and I eventually switch to AT&T and sold it for $125 dollars! Not bad, right?

Well, lately I have gotten involved in surveys a lot more. This is how you can score free laptops for kids! With the majority of these, you are just required to enter all your information, participate in the survey, complete the requirements, and just wait the gift to show up. At most, you may spend an hour on it. It is super easy, and you can even do a few of them at once!

Warrant - April 2031

They say the sky used to be blue I don't quite believe it. It's probably always been the color that it is. And there were cotton candy clouds. And birds to fly through it. Just stories we all love to tell our kids. So I'll close my electronic door And keep the cold outside. And hug my aluminium pillow so tight. And pray the radiation doesn't make me sick tonight. April 2031 They say there used to be a wind that wasn't caused by fans I wonder how it would have felt in my hair And the nuclear ring around the moon was caused by man if it was, then it's much too late to care So I'll put my safety goggles on and gaze out at the sun as the artificial atmostphere machines give off a constant hum in a world that's cold and peaceful, april 2031 No more sky and no more trees. April 2031 No more oxygen to breathe. April 2031 No more hate and no more war. April 2031 Nothing left worth fighting for. April 2031. As far back as Veitnam, we should have learned our lesson. But we closed our eyes and sent our sons away. And they told us we were winning as they sold more ammunition. Some were angry, most just looked the other way. And the night's illuminated by the endless glowing sand that swallowed all the oceans and choked off all the land. In a world beyond resuscitation Even by God's hand No more mountains no more sea April 2031 No more you and no more me April 2031 No more music no more songs April 2031 No God left to blame it on April 2031 No more children playing April 2031 No more ...
